The hometown hero is a cliche professional wrestling trope, but its something that can be effective when done correctly. Every wrestler has a hometown (Parts Unknown is filled with them,) and when WWE decides to have a show in a city that happens to be that wrestlers hometown, youd think they would try to give that particular wrestler even the slightest sliver of spotlight in order to please the people who came to see him or her perform. But thats not WWEs M.O. Instead, they like to do the exact opposite and humiliate the wrestlers who show up to perform in their hometowns. Over the years there have been many examples of moments where a wrestler had to suffer a loss or an embarrassing situation, even if he or she was in the middle of a push, simply because they happened to be performing in the very town they grew up in. Even if they werent wrestlers they would stuff go through the torment of having to do something embarrassing in front of many familiar faces. Here are ten examples of humiliating hometown moments that took place on WWE programming. Maybe more of these wrestlers should just say theyre from Parts Unknown....
10. Umaga Spikes Punk In Chicago - Judgment Day 2009
Chicago and CM Punk go together like peanut butter and jelly. Whenever Punk would arrive at the Chicago arena, they would ignite with uproarious cheers and applause for the Chicago native. The straight edge superstar could say and do whatever he wanted and he would have Chicago on his side. Back in 2009, Punk had a match against Umaga that took place on Judgment Day live in Chicago. When Punk arrived, the crowd showed their support while Umaga was treated to a heavy hailing of boos and jeers. One would think that Punk, who was at the time the Money in the Bank winner and was well on his way to eventually claiming the World Heavyweight Championship, would have gone over on Umaga on this occasion. Unfortunately for Punk, and for all of Chicago, that was not the plan. Instead, Umaga beat Punk clean with a Samoan Spike for the three count. It was a decent match that made both wrestlers look good, seeing a rising star like Punk suddenly get dropped down a peg in front of his hometown had to have been upsetting. On the plus side, Punk would survive this loss and the peak years of CM Punk in WWE were still to come.
