10. SummerSlam 1993 — Luger Wins (But Not Really...)

Much of the build for SummerSlam 1993 revolved around Lex Luger and his Lex Express. As the heir apparent to Hulk Hogan’s throne, Luger had been given an All-American gimmick and set about touring the country in his gaudy bus, shaking hands, signing autographs and basically being the biggest babyface possible.

Kicking off that push, he’d shown up on the USS Intrepid—on July 4 no less—where he bodyslammed the near 600-pound Yokozuna, setting up a SummerSlam meeting between the two for Yoko’s WWF Title.

All the hype seemed to suggest that Luger was just about guaranteed to win come the Aug 30 show, and indeed that’s exactly what happened. Except, the win came via count-out. Luger nailed Yokozuna with a surgically-fortified forearm, sending the champ tumbling from the ring and rendering him unable to answer the referee’s ten-count.

Not only that, but the result prompted wild celebrations from Luger, the locker room and the commentary team, even though the title hadn’t even changed hands.

Plus, it had been stipulated that this would be Luger’s one-and-only title shot, so he didn’t even get himself a rematch.

Why was he happy about that?
