11 Most Disappointing WWE PPV Endings

9. Royal Rumble 1999 — Mr. McMahon Wins The Rumble

By the late 1990s, the list of Royal Rumble winners was already looking like something of a who's-who of wrestling greats. Hulk Hogan, Ric Flair, Shawn Michaels and Steve Austin had each won the match on one or more occasion, which only makes it even more disappointing that, of all people, Mr. McMahon won the '99 Rumble.

Somehow, this 53-year-old non-wrestler managed to outlast 29 other guys, and after entering the match at number two, to boot.

In reality, McMahon wasn’t involved in vast swathes of the match. With him and Austin kicking off the action, the two proceeded to spend much of the following 57 minutes brawling around the Arrowhead Pond of Anaheim before Austin was destroyed by the Corporation. Back in the ring for the finish, a recovered Austin appeared on course for victory, but an interference from the Rock had him distracted, and allowed McMahon to sneak up from behind and bundle him over the top rope.

You could argue that time hasn’t done this one too many favours, as all of those antics were perfectly in keeping with that late ‘90s Attitude Era. But even so, McMahon should never have been winning such a marquee match with WrestleMania ramifications.
