The excitement surrounding CM Punk's 2011 'Pipe Bomb' Promo and announcement that he planned to win the WWE Title then leave the company hanging was palpable. For the first time in years, WWE storylines seemed to have an edge, and Punk (who had flirted with the main event before) was well on his way to becoming that generation's anti-hero.

Then, some ridiculous decision-making killed the whole deal and knackered Punk's renegade promises to successfully take the p*ss out of Vince McMahon's authority. Looking back, WWE will surely regret soiling their own plans and turning a summer rollercoaster into a merry jaunt on the tea cups.

The implosion of that potentially brilliant angle can be traced back to one stupid WWE Title change.

Picking a worthwhile successor isn't the only thing WWE have to worry about when booking title switches. They also have to be mindful of exactly who that person is beating, and what it might lead to afterwards. All too often, either because of knee-jerk decisions or an ill-advised desire to shake things up, the promotion's top prize has been left looking lame...
