5 Times WWE Failed John Cena At WrestleMania

"Once In A Lifetime"? So much for that...

John Cena has had some mammoth matches at WrestleMania during his 15-year stay on the WWE roster.

He's beaten Big Show, JBL, Triple H, Shawn Michaels, Batista, The Rock and more, and he's even been involved in one of 'Mania's most tender moments. The mixed tag-team match against The Miz and Maryse at 33 can't be considered a disappointment, however; it only existed to publicise Cena's engagement to Nikki Bella and was clearly an emotional night for both.

This year could be emotional for different reasons, if WWE don't get moving. Rumours that Cena will face a returning Rey Mysterio at 'Mania 34 follow similar hearsay on a "dream match" against The Undertaker. One thing has become clear: WWE themselves don't seem sure how best to use Cena in New Orleans.

In 2018, Cena's role at WrestleMania has become a bit of an afterthought. As much as that must be disappointing to one of the promotion's most loyal foot soldiers, this is far from the first time WWE have failed to come through for John on their biggest stage...

5. That Throwaway Match With Bray Wyatt

Daniel Bryan's rise to the WWE Title and the end of The Undertaker's long-running winning streak were the most memorable parts of WrestleMania XXX. Meanwhile, John Cena had to make do with routine win over Bray Wyatt in the midcard.

There was nothing especially wrong with the match, but it failed to make Wyatt look like WWE's new headliner (they'd continue making Bray look foolish by sacrificing him to 'Taker the very next year) and felt like a placeholder for Cena. Today, this would just be another match on Raw, never mind one befitting of the biggest show of the year.

Fans in New Orleans, ironically the site of this year's 'Mania, never believed for one second that Wyatt had a chance against Cena. Devoid of tension, drama or the thrills and spills people have typically come to expect from major matches on the show, this one passed by without leaving an imprint.

Mediocre would sum it up.
