7 Things You Should Know About WWE Royal Rumble 1991

The WWE Title is on the line, plus Virgil steals the show. Yes, really.

The 1991 Royal Rumble was a show that was built around American pride. That's not a new concept because WWE always does shows to put over the US, but it was an especially strong sentiment in early 1991.

With the US taking part in the Gulf War that involved Iraq trying to take over Kuwait, a lot of military personnel were sent over there. It was something that was discussed on the news on a daily basis, so it was a huge part of American culture at that time. Since WWE loves to take advantage of real stories that they can use on their shows, there was a strong theme of Americana all night long. In the WWE Title match, The Ultimate Warrior was set to defend the gold against Sgt. Slaughter. Warrior was the champion for about ten months going into this match. Slaughter turned into an Iraqi sympathizer months before this, so WWE pushed him all the way to a title shot because of it. Going into the Rumble match, Hulk Hogan was the clear favorite to win the match for the second year in a row. To compare it to something more current, it was about as obvious as John Cena winning the 2013 Rumble. The fourth Royal Rumble event (third on PPV) took place in Miami, Florida on January 29, 1991. Here are the results from that show. 1. The Rockers d. The Orient Express 2. Big Boss Man d. The Barbarian 3. Sgt. Slaughter d. The Ultimate Warrior 4. The Mountie d. Koko B Ware 5. Ted Dibiase and Virgil d. Dusty Rhodes & Dusty Rhodes 6. Hulk Hogan won the Royal Rumble match Here are seven things you should know about the 1991 Royal Rumble.
