8 Matches That Should Have Headlined WrestleMania (If WWE Had Listened To The Fans)

6. Bret Hart Vs. 'Macho Man' Randy Savage - WrestleMania IX

No WrestleMania season is complete without a large amount of WrestleMania IX-bashing; the Las Vegas event is largely considered to be the worst in WrestleMania history. The then-WWF was in a tough position at the time, with a transitional roster and an almost total lack of credible heels going into 1993.

It was at this same time that the promotion decided to introduce the rule that stated that the winner of the Royal Rumble would then go on to headline WrestleMania. Yokozuna won the '93 Rumble and became the first man to take that opportunity, but the lack of major heels and the possibility of a dream match meant that, even at this point, the fans were moving in a different direction to the company.

Instead of Bret Hart vs. Yokozuna, fans wanted to see Hart defend the WWF Championship against fellow babyface 'Macho Man' Randy Savage. It promised to be a true dream match, but the promotion's paranoia got in the way. Business was poor with Bret on top (primarily due to a lack of credible challengers) and Vince therefore wanted to put the title back on Hulk Hogan ahead of summer house shows.

Because of this (and a desperate need for bad guys) we got Yokozuna vs. Bret instead of Savage vs. Bret. It is difficult to say whether or not a Savage/Hart main event could have salvaged the show, but it clearly could not have done worse than Yoko/Bret (and the regrettable aftermath).

Born in the middle of Wales in the middle of the 1980's, John can't quite remember when he started watching wrestling but he has a terrible feeling that Dino Bravo was involved. Now living in Prague, John spends most of his time trying to work out how Tomohiro Ishii still stands upright. His favourite wrestler of all time is Dean Malenko, but really it is Repo Man. He is the author of 'An Illustrated History of Slavic Misery', the best book about the Slavic people that you haven't yet read. You can get that and others from www.poshlostbooks.com.
