8 Things Non-Wrestling People Don't Believe About Wrestling
7. The Unpaid Travel
It's perfectly reasonable to assume that stars working on behalf of WWE live the sort of pampered lifestyle typical of fellow major sportspeople and television personalities. Afterall, their employer is a multi-billion mass entertainment corporation on a similar if not grander footing to many of their contemporaries throughout the wider industry.
Reasonable, but bang wrong. That's precisely why FS1's Fair Game host Kristine Leahy was left stunned when Bayley casually dropped that superstars from Stamford are expected to not only drive themselves to and from shows - sometimes four hours each way - but pay for the privilege. Utterly nonplussed, Leahy rightly questioned how a company earning so much through auto-content could be so stingy.
It's simple: they can. WWE would argue life on the road is one of the great, bonding traditions of the industry - and will continue to pinch a few pennies leveraging that. Wading into the debate, Lance Storm noted that it's something wrestlers even preferred, as it did away with the corporate accountability of office-mandated itineraries. Though he did point out that, in WCW at least, expenses were covered. That makes it much more fun.
