8 Times WWE Recycled Show Names

7. Clash Of Champions

Starting 1988, the NWA and latterly WCW promoted 35 flagship television specials under the high-falutin banner Clash of the Champions (naturally featuring requisitie Roman numerals). The show played host to a number of significant matches from the Atlanta outfit's legacy, most notably Sting and Ric Flair's time limit draw on the very first edition, the second of The Nature Boy's trilogy with Ricky Steamboat, and Flair's 'I Quit' match against Terry Funk.

With such a stellar story behind it, it seemed right and proper WWE would one day choose to pay homage to the history making event, and that seemed precisely the case when Night of Champions was replaced with soundalike 'Clash of Champions' in 2016.

But there were nagging doubts from that conspicuously absent definite article, and sure enough, WWE were simply trading on the name, and not the reputation, of the WCW classic.

Benjamin was born in 1987, and is still not dead. He variously enjoys classical music, old-school adventure games (they're not dead), and walks on the beach (albeit short - asthma, you know). He's currently trying to compile a comprehensive history of video game music, yet denies accusations that he purposefully targets niche audiences. He's often wrong about these things.
