CM Punk was drafted from ECW to the main WWE roster on 23rd June, 2008, and one week later he shocked the world by cashing in his Money in the Bank briefcase to win the World Heavyweight Championship. For fans of Punk, it was an incredible moment, a truly emotional happening to see their man on top of the world.

It quickly fell apart somewhat however, when it was clear that despite being the champion Punk wasn't exactly 'the guy'. When people think of Money in the Bank winners and neglected title reigns they generally think of Jack Swagger, but that entire trope began with CM Punk in 2008.

Until his second Money in the Bank win in 2009 and subsequent heel turn, CM Punk was a fairly bland and forgettable babyface. He was treading water in the monstrous machine, an immense talent being wasted by a creative team that didn't want him in the first place.

Born in the middle of Wales in the middle of the 1980's, John can't quite remember when he started watching wrestling but he has a terrible feeling that Dino Bravo was involved. Now living in Prague, John spends most of his time trying to work out how Tomohiro Ishii still stands upright. His favourite wrestler of all time is Dean Malenko, but really it is Repo Man. He is the author of 'An Illustrated History of Slavic Misery', the best book about the Slavic people that you haven't yet read. You can get that and others from www.poshlostbooks.com.
