WWE: 5 Awful Gimmicks That Lasted Longer Than They Should Have

5. The Boogeyman

boogeyman In July 2005, a series of horror-themed vignettes began to air on Raw and, later, on Smackdown depicting a frightening figure in red and black makeup. That figure was the Boogeyman, who soon debuted and began to squash jobbers week-in, week-out whilst also terrorising the locker room. The gimmick was nothing short of horrific, as we were forced to watch Arizona native Marty Wright bash himself over the head with a giant alarm clock and, most disturbingly, eat live worms and spit them in to the faces of his opponents/victims. One storyline saw him feud with JBL, even defeating the WWE legend at the 2006 Royal Rumble, a feud which saw the ultimate lowpoint of the Boogeyman gimmick - JBL's PR woman, Jillian Hall, had a kayfabe growth on her face, which the Boogeyman sniffed, licked and bit off on Piper's Pit. Remarkably, the Boogeyman gimmick has had spells within WWE from 2005-2006, then again from 2006-2007, then with the ECW brand (when it was a part of WWE) from 2007-2009 and he even made a brief return in 2012, interrupting Booker T - another top wrestler the Boogeyman somehow managed to feud with - when he was presenting a Slammy Award. It's about time it disappeared for good.
