WWE WrestleMania 31 Main Event Plans Changed

Vince McMahon now wants Daniel Bryan to be added to WWE Title match.

The scheduled WrestleMania 31 main event match was Brock Lesnar defending the WWE Title against Royal Rumble winner Roman Reigns, but apparently those plans could be changed. According to Dave Meltzer on Wrestling Observer radio on Sunday night, WWE Chairman Vince McMahon has changed his mind and has decided it to make it a triple threat with Daniel Bryan involved. A few weeks ago it was reported that they wouldn't do a triple threat for the second year in a row, but apparently those plans have changed. The original WrestleMania booking plans for Bryan this year involved a match against Sheamus, who would return as a heel, and then there was a rumored match against fellow babyface Dolph Ziggler, which would have been an outstanding contest to make the fans happen. Apparently those plans have changed in the last few days because McMahon probably feels that if he does Reigns vs. Lesnar then the crowd may completely reject it. At least if Bryan is involved, fans could be into it and would have a rooting interest. It's important to note that WWE changes plans all the time, especially in the last few years. Last year's WrestleMania main event was supposed to be Batista challenging Randy Orton, but after the fans rejected Batista at both Royal Rumble and Elimination Chamber, Bryan was added to the mix and ended up leaving WrestleMania 30 as the WWE Champion. It was the right booking decision although WWE should have known better months earlier. In this year's scenario, Bryan is set to face Reigns in a #1 Contender's match where the winner gets to face Lesnar for the WWE Title at WrestleMania. They could do a scenario similar to what they did in 2006 when Randy Orton beat Rey Mysterio at the No Way Out PPV and Rey Mysterio (the Royal Rumble winner) still ended up getting the World Title shot at Kurt Angle, which Rey won. Then there was 2004 where Shawn Michaels signed the World Title contract to make it a triple threat with Triple H and Chris Benoit. The one thing we know for sure is that WWE has a lot of options right now. They could also involve Seth Rollins with his Money in the Bank briefcase and he could say that he wants a title shot at WrestleMania too, so maybe they will make it a four way match. Since WWE just did a triple threat match at the Royal Rumble it would be repetitive to do it again at WrestleMania. That's why it would make sense to make it a four way although that's not part of Meltzer's report. Rollins is rumored to face Randy Orton at WrestleMania. In other news regarding this scenario, WWE.com ran a poll over the weekend asking who was more deserving of the WrestleMania main event: Daniel Bryan or Roman Reigns. After 32,000 votes, Bryan had 86% of the vote.
If the match is a three way, the question is will Reigns leave as WWE Champion? That still seems like the most likely scenario. WWE has planned to put Reigns over at this show. Bryan had his moment last year. By adding him to the match, fans would be more interested in the match, but that doesn't mean that Bryan has to win. They might still put Reigns over as the WWE Champion at WrestleMania. As we say all the time when talking about WWE, plans are always subject to change. This is obviously not a sure thing until WWE officially promotes it. With Fast Lane coming up on February 22 they could change their mind there or even after that. For now, the plan for WrestleMania is Lesnar vs. Reigns vs. Bryan with the WWE Title on the line.
