4. Jenas Nods Home From Laurent Robert Freekick In Holland - PSV Eindhoven vs NUFC (UEFA CUP Quarter Final, April 2004)
One crumb of comfort following Newcastles early exit from the Champions League in 2003 was their participation in the UEFA Cup and a storming run to the semi-finals. And before they eventually fell to a Didier Drogba-inspired Marseille in the last four, Sir Bobby Robson took his troops to face his former club PSV Eindhoven at the Phillips Stadium. The Dutch outfit were strong, with the likes of Mark van Bommel, Wilfred Bouma and Mateja Kezman in their starting XI, and it was the latter who opened the scoring after quarter-of-an-hour. But United remained focussed, and snatched an equaliser right on the stroke of half-time when Jermaine Jenas connected with Laurent Roberts dangerous free-kick. The match ended 1-1, but set up the return leg at St. James Park perfectly, and thanks to a pair of headers from Alan Shearer and Gary Speed on home soil, the Magpies progressed.
