90. Sable Is Mankind’s “Mommy”

Fans tuning in live for SummerSlam 1996 surely thought there'd be more to Mankind's run in to stalk Sable during a match between Marc Mero and Goldust on the undercard. Or, perhaps they'd forgotten all about that once it came time for Mick Foley's alter ego to clash with The Undertaker in a thumping 'Boiler Room Brawl' later on the same show.

On commentary, Mr. Perfect alleged that Sable "kinda liked" Mankind. As heel commentators are prone to do, Perfect was talking out of his rear end, but the deranged masked freak would go on to refer to the blonde bombshell as "Mommy". Apparently, this was supposed to lead to a group that'd see Sable leave Mero for Mankind and Goldust.

Not romantically, for the record, or willingly. No, she'd simply be aligned with both on TV as a disgusted accomplice who didn't have a choice. Quite how the WWF would skirt around that kidnapping angle is anyone's guess, but it was considered away from the bright lights of TV.

Things reportedly fell apart when Mick made it clear that he absolutely didn't want to work opposite Mero at WrestleMania 13 the following year. Unfortunately for him, Marc suffered an injury pre-'Mania anyway, so he had to skip the event entirely, and Mankind teamed with Vader vs. Owen Hart and British Bulldog instead.

Nothing came of the "Mommy" business, but Foley was ahead of his time. Decades later, various wrestlers would start referring to Rhea Ripley as 'Mami' on episodes of Raw. Funny how things shake out!
