27. John Cena vs Shawn Michaels (WrestleMania 23)
Having defeated Triple H the previous year in his first WrestleMania headline slot, the stakes were raised for John Cena as he faced 'Mr. WrestleMania' himself, Shawn Michaels, at WrestleMania 23. Michaels was in sensational form on the lead-up to WrestleMania, viewing a main event and a shot at the WWE Championship as the coronation piece of his second chance in WWE. For Cena, the message was simple. Your time was up, his time was now. The WWE was now his kingdom, and you'd have to kill him to stop him from continuing his reign at the top.
Cena and Michaels would team several times on the lead up to WrestleMania, with Randy Orton and Edge both warning Cena that Michaels had turned on every partner he ever had. With Shawn protesting that this time was difference, Cena and Michaels would prove to be a winning team, until HBK hit Cena with Sweet Chin Music on the final episode of Raw before WrestleMania 23.
Shawn Michaels justified his 'Mr. WrestleMania' nickname by being phenomenal again at 'The Showcase Of The Immortals'. John Cena too, rose to the occasion, as both men delivered a fine main event that was won when Michaels tapped out to the STF. They would have a better match a few weeks later on Raw in London, but that doesn't diminish the quality of this great encounter.
