“All you need is kill” is a 2004 Japanese Sci-Fi light novel written by Hiroshi Sakurazaka. This successful novel has been most famously adapted by writer Ryosuke Takeuchi into the 2014 Graphic Novel by the same name, and masterfully illustrated by legendary mangaka Takeshi Obata (Death Note, Bakuman).

While the movie is mostly inspired by the original novel rather than the comic itself, Edge of Tomorrow was partly produced by Viz Media, publisher of the graphic novel, ditching the dramatic tones of both written works for a more holliwood-esque experience.

The core of the story remains pretty much the same – Groundhog Day with Aliens – while it's our protagonist that goes through quite the change. Young and fervent Japanese soldier Keiji Kiriya turns into an older, negligent American, Major Bill Cage, played by none other that Tom Cruise. Rita Vrataski, The Full Metal Bitch turns into a slightly tamer British Emily Blunt.

While many other plot points of the story were tweaked, the biggest change came to its tone and finale. Both novel and manga are considerably gloomier and ended in more tragic terms, but the movie opted for a more upbeat and bittersweet ending.
