10 Most Hated Retcon Changes In Marvel Comics
9. Dum Dum Is An LMD
Dum Dum Dugan is a SHIELD agent who will hold a special place in the hearts of many a Marvel fan. The loveable, mustachioed No. 2 to SHIELD director Nick Fury since the days of the Howling Commandos, the title in which he debuted all the way back in 1963.
That’s the kind of longevity you don’t mess with, the kind of loyalty that stays left. Or at least until the 2014 run of Original Sin, a story arc that split opinion but received its fair share of negative reviews.
And who can blame the critics after Dum Dum’s entire existence was essentially thrown in the garbage like yesterday’s ham, Fury revealing his cigar-smoking sidekick to have been a Life Model Decoy for the past, of, 50 years or so.
Original Sin brought numerous retcons to the surface, and the LMD excuse is one that’s been used by Fury many times in the past, but perhaps never to erase a character so close to our hearts as Dugan.
If the main objective of robbing us of the only Marvel character capable of sporting a bowler hat with any modicum of class was to turn us against Fury even more, it worked.
Other than that, killing off Dum Dum was personal.
