7 Comic Book Story Arcs That Were Never Finished (And Why)

5. Daredevil/Bullseye: The Target

Kevin Smith has a bit of a habit of not finishing comics. A shame, given his work on Green Arrow, Daredevil and the Green Hornet has been so well received, but it's a sad reality that the Fatman on Batman host (great podcast, by the way!) hasn't always managed to steer a comic to an actual conclusion.

Case in point, Daredevil/Bullseye: The Target. Smith had previously helmed a compelling story based on the Man Without Fear in Daredevil: Guardian Devil, which was drawn by Joe Quesada, but the character was in the hands of a new creative team now. Brian Bendis and Alex Maleev where in the midst of what would later prove to be a seminal run on the character, one that impacted Matt Murdock for over a decade after they left the series.

Still, Smith persisted with his Daredevil book, and it looked great! Artist Glenn Fabry was to handle art duties throughout the entire arc, but only one issue was ever published, in November 2002. Weeks, months and then years passed with no word of when a second issue was meant to drop, with Fabry even being forced to drop out of the project. He was then replaced by Adam Kubert, who later left to pursue an exclusive contract at DC, at which point updates on The Target became few and far between.

The project is unlikely to materialise at this stage, with Smith having since gone on the record to claim that he was personally dissatisfied by the first issue, which he'd rushed into production to ensure he could use Bullseye before he could appear in the Bendis and Maleev run. CBR later revealed that 'The Target' in question was going to be Captain America.

Content Producer/Presenter

WhatCulture's very own resident movie guy, Ewan has been working in the content creation biz for over 10 years now, having started as a freelance contributor to WhatCulture Gaming all the way back in 2015. After graduating with a First-Class Honours in History from Northumbria University in 2017 (where he won a prize for a totally killer dissertation on the Watergate years), Ewan took on the role of Comics Editor at WhatCulture and quickly developed WhatCulture Comics into one of the biggest superhero-focused channels on YouTube. He followed this with a brief hiatus at Screen Rant in 2021, where he worked across the Gaming and Film sections as a writer and editor, before returning to WhatCulture as a Senior Content Producer / Presenter in 2023. He started his own podcast, We Love Dad Movies, in 2022, and has contributed several written pieces to the Eisner-nominated comics website Shelfdust as well. In his current role, Ewan incorporates his love of cinema, comic books, and history into written pieces and video essays for WhatCulture's Film & TV channel, as well as WhatCulture Gaming and WhatCulture Horror, with a particular focus on nineties-era Dad Movies, old school Westerns, and Golden Age Hollywood Noir. John Carpenter is his fave, and he thinks Batman Beyond should never have been cancelled. If that's your vibe, you'll probably like his stuff.
