Birds Of Prey - 10 Reasons To Be Excited

Why do fans need to pay attention to the DCEU's latest offering?

Set for release in February 2020, Birds of Prey (And The Fantabulous Emancipation of One Harley Quinn) released its first trailer the other week, ahead of Joker's premiere.

Set to be the eighth instalment in the DCEU, as well as a spin-off of 2016's Suicide Squad, Birds of Prey sees Harley Quinn teaming up with DC veterans Black Canary, Huntress and Renee Montoya to protect Cassandra Cain from the crime lord Black Mask.

With its obvious association with Suicide Squad, Birds of Prey hopes to emancipate itself from the former film, just as Quinn seeks emancipation from the Joker. It'll be an up-hill battle after the damage caused by WB's 2016 dud, but there's plenty to be excited about for this film and the first trailer has already given a lot to dissect.

Between an unrestrained creative team, little to no reports of studio meddling, and a promising ensemble cast, Birds of Prey looks to be on the home straight. The women-centric direction and the black-comedy style is likely to appeal to a wide audience, and should be a fantastic addition to the recently sought after February spot at the Box Office, following on from the success of the darkly comedic Deadpool.

If you were to ask someone what they thought of Suicide Squad, it's more than likely that their response will be less than favourable. But regardless of what you thought of the 2016 summer blockbuster as a film overall, most would agree that Margot Robbie's performance of Harley Quinn was as close to spot on as they come.

By the end of Suicide Squad, Harley Quinn comes closer to the anti-hero that fans of the comic books have grown to know and love, and Birds of Prey looks to continue her story of redemption.

From the newly released trailer, Birds of Prey seems to promise a more innocent and well-intentioned Harley - albeit with the same violent tendencies - that can be traced back to her initial appearances in the coveted Batman: The Animated Series.

Although the Birds of Prey aren't quite the Gotham City Sirens that many would expect Quinn to be associated with (a team with Catwoman and Poison Ivy), Quinn being surrounded by gal pals is always a good time. Harley is at her best when she's a foil and nuisance to those around her, and is just too lovable to ditch.
