The new ongoing Star Wars series from Marvel Comics is underway and just six issues in, they are delivering a major shake-up for Luke Skywalker. The series is set immediately following Empire Strikes Back, and it details Luke's journey from the unsure, broken kid he is at the end of that story to the capable Jedi master he has become by the beginning of Return of the Jedi.

It's already been confirmed that the series will reveal what happened to Luke's lost blue lightsaber, the one originally owned by Anakin and eventually used by Rey in the sequels, but now we've also learned that we will see a new weapon Luke used before he built the green lightsaber he ends up with later on. In Star Wars #6, Luke Skywalker will begin to wield a lightsaber with a yellow blade.

Yellow lightsabers have a long history in the current Star Wars canon. Traditionally used by Jedi Temple Guards, as seen in The Clone Wars, yellow blades have also been used by characters such as Asajj Ventress and, most recently, Rey. It's likely that Luke will find this lightsaber inside of a Jedi Temple, and that it was formerly owned by a Jedi Temple Guard. However, the lightsabers they usually wielded were double-sided weapons known as lightsaber pikes.

Is it possible that this lightsaber was owned by a special Jedi Temple Guard? Perhaps it was originally a lightsaber pike that Luke has altered in some way.

Charles Soule, the writer of this series, took to Twitter after the announcement was made to share his inspiration for the development. He got the idea to give Luke a yellow lightsaber from a 1977 Kenner action figure that mistakenly depicted Luke with a lightsaber featuring a yellow blade.

Taking old flubs and turning them into interesting new pieces of canon is nothing new. The famous ice cream machine seen being carried in Empire Strikes Back was later revealed in The Mandalorian to be a portable safe known as a camtono, for example.

In the modern era of Star Wars canon, a yellow lightsaber brings to mind one thing: the final scene of The Rise of Skywalker, depicting Rey with a mysterious new yellow lightsaber. While the hilt of Luke's new lightsaber looks nothing like that of the one Rey now wields, we have seen kyber crystals get moved into new hilts before. It's possible that the introduction of Luke's new temporary lightsaber may also be a secret origin story for Rey's lightsaber.

We know that Luke doesn't keep this lightsaber, judging by the fact that by the beginning of Return of the Jedi he's got his own brand new green lightsaber. Perhaps whenever Luke loses this lightsaber at some point in the comic, we'll learn about how it made its way to Rey decades down the line.
