22. The Trevor Slattery Reveal – Iron Man 3
To kick off Phase Two of the MCU, the man who started it all became the first hero to complete his trilogy of movies. It was a tough ask for any movie to follow the success of The Avengers, and though Iron Man 3 did well at the box office it is one of the least popular MCU movies to date.
Everyone knows the big twist of the movie. It was a move by Marvel Studios that angered a lot of fans, and it certainly didn't do justice to the excellent comic book villain that is the Mandarin, but other than the Trevor Slattery reveal, Iron Man 3 is pretty much completely forgettable.
Sir Ben Kingsley's performance was fantastic when we thought he was the intimidating Mandarin, and though it was disappointing that he was nothing more than a puppet fabricated by Aldrich Killian, the reveal was at least something that surprised every single fan in every single audience. After this, Kingsley's performance as the drug addicted thespian was just as good as before, if not better.
The MCU knows how to inject humour and comedy into its movies, and once you get over the shock and disappointment of the Mandarin, you can appreciate Trevor Slattery as a genuinely funny character.
