That is, if the film is faithful to the comic books. The New Mutants name has actually been carried through multiple series over the years, spinning off from the original by X-Men genius Chris Claremont (who created most of your favourite characters and storylines), and genius abstract artist Bill Sienkiewicz, whose name nobody can pronounce. The second volume was introduced in 2003, with another team of teenage mutants taught by the now-grown original New Mutants working as their teachers. It was a fun, mostly light series which saw them pitted against their evil rivals, the Hellions, a similarly young mutant team lead by Emma Frost. Once that series was relaunched as New X-Men: Academy X, there was room for a third New Mutants series which launched in 2009 and mostly brought back together the original team for a family reunion. Chances are the film will come back to that core group of first-wave New Mutants much as the comics always do.
