10 "Ambiguous" Movie Endings (That Totally Aren't)

6. John Wick Dies - John Wick: Chapter 4

Take Shelter Michael Shannon
Lionsgate

John Wick: Chapter 4 just might play host to the most annoying ending discourse of any film released this year.

The finale sees John (Keanu Reeves) be mortally wounded during the climactic duel with Caine (Donnie Yen), before asking Winston (Ian McShane) to take him "home," and then keeling over while thinking of his late wife Helen (Bridget Moynahan).

The final scene shows Winston and the Bowery King (Laurence Fishburne) at John's grave, and that's that. John Wick's story is over, right?

Except because Hollywood has conditioned audiences to believe that death means nothing, and nobody's really dead unless you see their corpse get incinerated, there are of course those who believe that John survived the shooting.

The "evidence"? We didn't see him being buried, his dog looks off into the distance during the final grave scene, and perhaps most plausibly, the movie made enough money that Lionsgate quickly confirmed that a fifth film was in development.

The movie has a huge amount of finality to it in terms of John's story, and while it is absolutely possible that Reeves returns for a fifth movie, that in no way feels like the genuine, original intent of that ending.

Given the size and scope of the John Wick universe at this point, though, it'd be far more interesting to see a fifth film focus on other characters and let John rest.
