10 A-List Actors Who Did Z-Grade Horror Films
4. Johnny Depp - Freddy's Dead: The Final Nightmare
Johnny Depp makes a cameo in this 6th and “final” Elm Street movie, and the joke appears to be that he made his film debut in the 1984 original. Then again, he’s presenting an anti-drug PSA, so maybe it’s a nudge-wink reference to his druggy past.
Billed as “Oprah Noodlemantra”, Johnny is explaining to a stoned teenager (Garfield’s Breckin Meyer) that his brain is an egg and his brain on drugs is a frying egg when Freddy Krueger makes an appearance. Hitting Depp in the face, Freddy says, “What’re you on? Looks like a frying pan and some eggs to me!”
Laugh? You’ll walk out.
Also in the film are Roseanne Barr and Alice Cooper, so by this time Freddy was like Batman in the Joel Schumacher movies – they’d removed him from the shadows, surrounded him with stars and given him a steady stream of one-liners. In other words, they’d turned him into a cartoon.
