The third film adaptation of Jack Finney's novel is one of director Abel Ferrera's least controversial films, and while critics like Roger Ebert hailed it as the best yet, others derided it as inane, claiming that setting it on a military base - where everyone is supposed to act the same anyway - takes away from the insidious terror of a foreign invasion.
Whatever your opinion, and whatever the filmmaker was trying to say about the military, sounds like it was better and more clearly expressed in earlier drafts. Originally written by Stuart Gordon and Dennis Paoli of Re-Animator film with assistance from Larry Cohen, it took place just outside the military base, putting small-town average citizens in focus once again.
