10 Abandoned Scripts Better Than The Finished Movie
3. Wes Craven Presents Was The Matrix With Monsters
They came and went out of theatres with little to no fanfare, one of the few films under the banner of "Wes Craven Presents". Though Craven's involvement was little more than funding and licensing his name, They does seem like a project that would attract the director; like A Nightmare on Elm Street, it focuses on people suffering from night terrors that turn out to be much more than just bad dreams.
Unfortunately, what killed you were anonymous boogeymen afraid of the light. But that wasn't always the case. Orginally, the 2002 film was written by Brandon Hood with a concept that sounds very much like The Matrix, but horror.
Hood's script explained where "They" took their victims: They are godlike, organic beings that exist just beyond our world and harvest our organs and limbs for spare parts.
Alas, the studio rejected any sort of explanation and had the script rewritten from scratch.
