10 Actors Bullied Into Roles They Never Wanted

5. Anne Hathaway - The Princess Diaries 2

Walt Disney Pictures

We're not saying that Joel Schumacher's The Phantom of the Opera was any good - because it totally wasn't - but it must have been preferable to starring in another squeaky clean bubble-gum children's film when an actor wants to actually get their serious career moving.

We are, of course, talking about Anne Hathaway, who had to drop out of performing in Phantom (with her role eventually going to Emmy Rossum) as its filming would have overlapped with shooting The Princess Diaries 2: Royal Engagement.

To be fair to Hathaway, she acts the pro and gives the role her all, which probably helped contribute to its impressive box office performance, even if the film was critically lambasted. Schumacher's film didn't fare much better, but at least it would have helped signal the direction of Hathaway's career. Thankfully she soon course-corrected herself by appearing in the likes of Brokeback Mountain and Rachel Getting Married. The rest, as they say, is history.
