10 Actors Who Turned Down 2013's Biggest Movies

8. Benicio Del Toro Turned Down Benedict Cumberbatch's Role In Star Trek Into Darkness

It's downright factual to say that Benedict Cumberbatch was pretty much the best thing about the otherwise wobbly - but still entertaining - space sequel Star Trek Into Darkness, and brought new theatrical heights to infamous villain Khan (or is that John Harrison? Who freakin' knows?). Still, ol' Benedict reportedly wasn't the first actor in line to play this character: Puerto Rican actor Benicio Del Toro was originally asked if he fancied a go at re-imagining the role. The deal apparently fell apart when Del Toro's agents couldn't negotiate the right monetary figure, which almost definitely means that they didn't offer him enough cash - what else could that mean, after all? In retrospect, then, there's a chance that Del Toro might have been a little peeved that this didn't go ahead, given how well Benedict Cumberbatch's performance was received, and the amount of the money that Into Darkness brought in at the box office. Still, Star Trek Into Darkness was criticised by many for plot holes and a generally weak story, which Del Toro might have considered something akin to dodging a bullet. But given that the actor hasn't really appeared in much of note in the last few years, this could have potentially been the role that catapulted him back into the mainstream. Still, he's set to appear as the villain in Marvel's upcoming Guardians of the Galaxy, which should do a pretty good job of that.
