The Failure(s) - The Human Torch - Fantastic Four Series (2005-2007)

The Second Chance - Steve Rogers/Captain America - Marvel Cinematic Universe (2011-Present)

The Fantastic Four have had a fairly torrid time on the big screen given their long and storied history in comics. A 1994 film adaptation was made on the cheap and never released to the public in order to maintain the rights to the characters, before a critically lambasted 2005 edition was deemed successful enough to warrant a similarly panned 2007 sequel (Rise Of The Silver Surfer). The 2015 reboot deserves no words given its mediocrity, and Marvel will be hoping for a case of 'third time lucky' when they inevitably bring their First Family to the screen once more.

One of the lynchpins of the Marvel Cinematic Universe has been Chris Evans as Steve Rogers/Captain America, who has appeared in his own film trilogy, all of the Avengers films and a handful of cameos. The actor turned down the role on three occasions, having been reluctant to commit to another superhero franchise after his negative experiences as the Human Torch on the aforementioned Fantastic Four films.

You have to wonder why Marvel were so set on him given that he had little else in the way of box office success to his name at the time, but their persistence was a gift to all of us and Evans will be sorely missed after his all-but-confirmed final appearance as the character in Avengers: Endgame.
