10 Actors We Still Can't Believe Are Oscar Nominees
4. John C. Reilly (Chicago)
To most people under the age of 25, they know John C. Reilly for his appearances in a string of gross-out, man-child comedies, films like Walk Hard, Step Brothers, Talladega Nights and so on, but he is also a decorated dramatic actor, having worked for the likes of Martin Scorsese (Gangs of New York, The Aviator), Paul Thomas Anderson (Hard Eight, Boogie Nights, Magnolia) and Terrence Malick (The Thin Red Line) over the years. His serious roles tend to be low-key enough that they can fly under the radars of most casual filmgoers, but the one to catch people's eye was as the buffoonish Amos Hart in the Best Picture-winning musical Chicago, for which Reilly earned a Best Supporting Actor nomination. It impresses me how separate Reilly keeps these two sides of his career compared to the other actors on this list, and I'd love to see him take on more serious, dramatic starring roles.
Stay at home dad who spends as much time teaching his kids the merits of Martin Scorsese as possible (against the missus' wishes).
