10 Actors Tricked Into Doing Famous Movie Scenes
4. Dr. Strangelove - George C. Scott Is Tricked Into Funnier Takes
When it comes to unorthodox approaches to bringing a desired performance out of an actor, the infamously particular Stanley Kubrick is in a class of his own.
Though most people are well aware of the hell he put The Shining star Shelley Duvall through to bring his vision of Wendy Torrance to life, the director also wasn't above straight up lying to his performers for the sake of a good take. This is something George C. Scott found out for himself whilst filming Dr. Strangelove with the director.
Throughout the shoot, Scott was said to have been hesitant about playing the part of General Buck Turgidson too big in the black comedy. So, Kubrick encouraged the performer to spread his wings and dial up his performance, but insisted that these takes were only acting as exercises and wouldn't be included in the finished article. However, Kubrick soon went back on those words and, as seen in Scott's noticeably heightened gestures during the hilarious "has he got a chance?" scene, his more animated takes were immortalised on-screen.
Though, Scott initially felt let down by Kubrick's decision to lie to his face, and swore to never work with him again, he'd later come to appreciate both his turn as the General and the film as a whole.
