Having appeared alongside Tom Hardy in Inception, Cillian is also no stranger to mainstream audiences, so he too could prove to be problematic in regards to overshadowing the character. However, as compared to Hardy, Murphy walks the line just enough to be able to pull off the role without drawing too much attention.
It's easy to see what Murphy could bring to the role, he has an on-screen image that can be used in a variety of ways. His still and steady control of emotion always makes it seem as though he is in control, even when he is very clearly not, and this would work correctly for the character.
He would bring an instant sense of edge to Bond, one that other performers have not entirely managed to thus far. Craig did bring something entirely new but still made Bond feel classic, whereas Murphy's unique face and tone could help to bring out a new perspective on the once thought perfected spy.
