When watching the admittedly fun 2010 flick, Piranha 3D, you may be struck by the similarity between the character of Matt Boyd and Jaws’ scientist Matt Hooper. Well, they are both played by Richard Dreyfuss, and they have a knack for getting too close to dangerous fish with pointy teeth.

A further similarity is that Boyd sings ‘Show Me The Way To Go Home’ which the shark hunting gang sing on The Orca in Jaws.

Both Dreyfuss and director Alexandre Aja confirmed that Boyd is in fact Hooper, and despite claims made by Dreyfuss that he solely took the role for money to give to charity, it also doubles as a neat homage to Peter Benchley’s 1974 novel: Jaws.

In the book, Hooper is actually killed during a cage dive, whereas he survived in the film. Perhaps the role was taken by the actor only so he could give the beloved aquatic icon a proper send off.

Dreyfuss may have been the instigator behind this choice, in spite of saying he had more material motives.
