10 Actors Who Can't Catch A Break

2. Matt Smith

Matt Smith emerged from relative obscurity to land the title role in Dr Who, and you’ll find few who’ll disagree that he did a terrific job. Leaving the beloved series a lot younger than most actors, it seemed that the world was at his feet.

While he has received great notices for theatre work and has played Prince Philip to acclaim on The Crown, it’s fair to say Smith is struggling to crack the movies. He was cut from cult hit In Bruges, then appeared in Terminator Genisys, which may be the worst in the franchise (and that’s saying something).

The film adaptation of Pride and Prejudice and Zombies was a flop, failing to recoup even its modest budget, and his more recent efforts have gone straight to streaming and bad reviews.

Most galling of all: he was cut from the final Star Wars, in which he was supposedly playing a pivotal character. He has a chance to make things right with a major role in Marvel movie Morbius, though we’ll be waiting a while for that one: it’s been pandemic-bumped to 2021.
