10. Johnny Depp

We start with the man who's potential casting gave rise to this very article. Kevin Smith, the legendary director - also of Jay and Silent Bob fame - was speaking on his excellent Fatman Beyond podcast when the idea of putting Depp in the role came up. He had the following to say.

"Who the f**k wouldn’t want to play The Joker? Heath Ledger won an Oscar, Joaquin Phoenix won an Oscar, and of all the actors out there that could possibly take a roll of the dice on The Joker, Johnny Depp is actually kinda f***ing perfect. You gotta admit he’d be fun man, like of all the parts he’s played he’s kind of perfect for a take on The Joker”.

He's not wrong, and such an adaptable and watchable character-actor like Depp feels like the next logical step after Phonenix elevated the role to almost untouchable status. This, of course, wouldn't phase Depp, and he's shown over his long career he comfortably has the range for the part.
