10 Actors Who Hated Their Own Movie Characters

5. Sally Field - Aunt May (The Amazing Spider-Man)

On paper, Sally Field seemed like a perfect choice to play Aunt May in the Marc Webb-directed Amazing Spider-Man films, though in the years since playing the iconic role twice, the actress has opened up about finding no joy in it.

Field confirmed in a 2016 interview with Howard Stern that she only signed up to the franchise because The Amazing Spider-Man would be the final film produced by Field's long-time friend Laura Ziskin, who succumbed to cancer shortly before it was released:

"It's not my kind of movie. But my friend Laura Ziskin was the producer, and we knew it would be her last film, and she was my first producing partner, and she was a spectacular human."

Field added that she put "not a great deal" of thought into playing the part, before delivering a devastating put-down about May's flat characterisation:

"It's really hard to find a three dimensional character in it, and you work it as much as you can, but you can't put ten pounds of s**t in a five pound bag."

Well said, Sally, well said. It's a shame this iteration of May was ultimately such a damp squib, and clearly didn't deserve an actress of Field's talents.
