10. Johnny Depp
Johnny Depp has played several unique and distinct characters in his career, which has been long and varied. Hes appeared in some very successful films and doesnt shy away from taking on roles that are a bit eccentric or unusual. Since his first film appearance as Glen in a Nightmare on Elm Street (and having one of the best death scenes in that movie) he has gone on to become one of Hollywoods biggest A-listers. Prior to being cast in Edward Scissorhands, Depp was well known to teenagers thanks to his role in the TV series 21 Jump Street. He was trying to break free of the teen-friendly, eye-candy image and landed this role after other more well known actors turned it down. The appearance of Edward, coupled with his awkwardness and limited communication made for a role that a lesser actor would have struggled to portray. Not only did Depp bring a totally unique character to life but he made audiences empathise and sympathise with this tragic creature. Captain Jack Sparrow is without a doubt one of cinemas most iconic and beloved characters of the last decade. Depp took a risk in how he portrayed the character, turning what could have been someone very flat into someone that you cant help but watch. Disney werent convinced that it was the right way to go and were nervous that the way Depp was playing the character would confuse people or put them off. However the actors instincts were proved to be spot on and a new icon was born, going on to appear in three sequels. Other iconic roles portrayed by Depp include Willy Wonka in the remake of Charlie and the Chocolate Factory and the Mad Hatter in Alice in Wonderland. Depp will soon be appearing on our cinema screens in what the studios hope to be their next big franchise, The Lone Ranger. He will play Tonto, the Rangers trusty Native American companion, who just happens to have a dead bird on his head. Certainly looks iconic!
