8. Jodie Foster Thinks Marvel Movies Are Making Audiences Dumb

What She Said

"Going to the movies has become like a theme park. Studios making bad content in order to appeal to the masses and shareholders is like fracking — you get the best return right now but you wreck the earth. It’s ruining the viewing habits of the American population and then ultimately the rest of the world.”

Why She Said It

Jodie Foster cut her teeth in Hollywood playing complex characters in critically acclaimed films. And it seems Foster never let go of that sense of serious purpose and earnestness that she infuses her performances with, in real life either. So much so that she frowns upon Marvel's populist, appealing-to-the-lowest-common-denominator genre of hitmakers.

Foster famously compared making films based on DC and Marvel comic characters to fracking, the real-world, highly destructive process of fracturing entire landmasses to mine minerals. Ouch. Harsh words, to say the least. Once again we have an acclaimed actor complaining about the apparent lack of depth of Marvel movies and the bad example they are setting for the rest of the film industry.

It has to be wondered at what point were blockbuster movies also suddenly expected to be Oscar-worthy fare? Back when the original Star Wars trilogy were the box office champs? Or when that title was held by Titanic? Haven't box office smashes always been about appealing to as wide a demographic as possible, even if it means dumbing down the storyline?
