10 Actors Who Just Gave Their Worst Performance EVER
2. Joaquin Phoenix - Napoleon
Love it or hate it, it's safe to say that Joaquin Phoenix's turn in Ridley Scott's Napoleon biopic was a performance like nobody expected.
If Phoenix seemed destined to give a big, hammy turn as the legendary French Emperor, that's ultimately the exact opposite of what he does. And let's be honest - it kinda sucks.
Phoenix decides to instead play Napoleon as a mumbly, scarcely intelligible weirdo who appears to lack all the charisma and authority which apparently made him such a persuasive leader in the first place.
The film makes it clear that Scott hasn't got any interest whatsoever in a biopic that lionises Bonaparte, but all the same, Phoenix's approach feels completely wrong-headed if this movie is going to be anything close to a factual account of who the man was.
More to the point, he's way, way too old to play Napoleon for large swaths of the film - being more than double Napoleon's actual age during the Siege of Toulon sequence at the beginning.
Though some might appreciate Phoenix and Scott's attempt to almost subvert the very idea of a historical biopic itself, for those excited to see Phoenix devouring the scenery as one of the most iconic leaders in history, this felt like a brutal missed opportunity.
Don't be shocked if Phoenix receives his first ever Razzie nomination this year for his work on the film.
