10 Actors Who Learned To Play Instruments For Their Roles

7. Rachel Weiz in The Brothers Bloom

The Brothers Bloom is an eccentric film in many ways, with its two main leads trading wits and emotions over its runtime. Rian Johnson's blend of comedy and heartfelt moments made this crime caper a unique watch.

When it came to creating the characters however, they needed to be very versatile throughout the production. This spoke to their broad personalities. Rachel Weisz was cast fairly early on, feeling it would be a worthy diversion from her many dramatic roles.

Weisz took on a tremendous amount of work for the film, aiming to portray Penelope's many skills with as great an authenticity as possible. In this case, the piano was the main instrument on display. She accomplished this and more over two weeks of rehearsal with help from her co-stars and other coaches.

The final result manifested itself as Penelope played for Adrien Brody's Bloom Bloom a simple yet effective piece that created quick transitions between hobbies. While the sequences only took up a small portion of the film, Rachel was able to diversify her character's talents. Many agreed that her performance was the best of the film - in no small part down to the effort she put into learning an instrument.
