10 Actors Who Must Regret Turning Down Major Movie Roles
1. Will Smith - Neo (The Matrix)
Coming hot off the success of Men in Black, Will Smith was offered the part of Neo in The Matrix, but said no because he just couldn't get on board with the way the movie was pitched to him, and he has since acknowledged that it's a difficult concept to pitch to an actor.
Keanu Reeves eventually won the role, which spawned a trilogy that not only scored him approximately $250 million, but made him one of the most iconic movie characters of all time.
Smith, meanwhile, starred in the atrocious mega-bomb Wild Wild West, but later acknowledged that Reeves did things with the Neo role that he never would've been able to (namely, play it stoic).
Would It Have Worked?: Smith isn't wrong about him being better-suited to more effervescent characters, but at the same time, there's no way decking Smith out in a black jacket with guns wouldn't have been totally bada**.
