How did the change work out? Gaining a co-director credit on Robert Rodriguez's visually stylish adaptation of his Dark Horse comic Sin City, Frank Miller got the impression that he could turn any comic property to his own style. The Spirit, originally an Eisner comic and now published by DC, has its own style and decades of history, but Miller's movie became a visual copy of Sin City with a tone that veered between murkily dark and bizarre slapstick. Samuel L. Jackson appeared as villain The Octopus in a succession of ridiculous outfits including a Nazi uniform. The costume of the most despised individuals of the 20th century was even more fetishized for entertainment by sidekick Silken Floss. Actress Scarlett Johansson was given no more role than looking good in form fitting, provocative outfits and plunging necklines. Despite The Spirits failure, both actors are big enough stars to feature in the far more successful Marvel Cinematic Universe. While they appear in multiple movies, their SHIELD agents remain part of the background. As with The Spirit its a case of looking cool in outfits that would look ridiculous on others for Jackson (eyepatch) and looking hot in outfits that are both tight and cleavage revealing for Johansson. By The Avengers both had been given a little character development. Who knows, maybe their appearance in the Captain America sequel will really give them something to do.
