10 Actors Who Refused To Return For Sequels To Acclaimed Films

8. Will Ferrell - Elf II

The likes of Mugatu in Zoolander (2001), Brennan Huff in Step Brothers (2008) and Ron Burgunday in Anchorman: The Legend of Ron Burgundy (2004) have all cemented Will Ferrell as a comedic icon. Yet, many would argue that his role as Buddy in Elf (2003) is still the character Ferrell is best known for.

That's why it's crazy that, nearly twenty years on from the unexpected Christmas smash hit, we're still yet to see the comedy superstar return as the over-enthusiastic elf.

Well, this non-existent sequel is likely down to the fact that Ferrell himself is seriously reluctant to return to the role.

Talking about turning down the chance to appear in a second Elf film a few years after the original was released, Ferrell said:

'I didn't want to wander into an area that could erase all the good work I've done - but you watch, I'll do some sequel in the future that's crap.'

It was rumoured that Ferrell was offered around £22.9 million to reprise the role, but it's clear the actor felt the risk of the film failing and people claiming 'he did the sequel for the money' wasn't worth even those eye-watering rewards.

However, he did eventually return for an Anchorman sequel by the name of Anchorman 2: The Legend Continues (2013), and that follow-up actually outscored the original on Rotten Tomatoes' Tomatometer.

So, who knows? There may be hope for a Buddy comeback someday soon.
