10 Actors Who Threatened To Quit Famous Movies

1. Dwayne Johnson (Pain & Gain)

Dwayne 'The Rock' Johnson doesn't seem like the type of guy to throw in the towel on anything he does, and yet, according to director Michael Bay, the star came surprisingly close to quitting his 2013 movie Pain & Gain.

In fact, Bay claims that Johnson did quit the project roughly one week before shooting was scheduled to begin, forcing Bay to give him a pep-talk to bring him back onboard. He told Johnson "you are my secret weapon", and assured him the movie would be worth his time:

"He literally quit the week before. And he goes, 'I can't do this.' And I'm like, 'Dwayne, you are my secret weapon on this movie.' And I wrote him this long letter of all the actors I worked with who said they were scared to do something and how it turned out. And he goes, 'Ok. Ok. Alright.'"

Though joining a Michael Bay movie is something of a gamble in terms of the final product's quality (for every Armageddon, there's a Transformers 2), Johnson's gamble paid off here - not only is Pain & Gain one of the better Bay movies, it's also one of the best performances of Johnson's career.

Danny has been with WhatCulture for almost nine years, and is currently Doctor Who Editor and WhoCulture Channel Manager, overseeing all of WhatCulture's Whoniverse coverage. He has been writing and video editing for 10+ years, and first got a taste for content creation after making his own Doctor Who trailers and uploading them to YouTube (they're admittedly a bit rusty by today's standards). If you need someone to recite every Doctor Who episode in order or to tell you about the making of 1988's Remembrance of the Daleks, Danny is the person to ask.
