10 Actors Who Tried Like Hell To Win An Oscar (But Failed)
9. Jim Carrey - Man On The Moon
Jim Carrey was another actor who, having achieved superstardom in the early 1990s, was keen to stretch his wings a bit further and close out the decade with some awards recognition.
1998's The Truman Show offered up the first solid evidence that Carrey could do a lot more than his standard rubber-faced shtick, and it won him a Golden Globe - but no Oscar nomination.
On his next feature, Carrey would throw himself more aggressively at a character than ever before, taking on the role of famed US comedian Andy Kaufman for director Milos Forman's 1999 biopic Man on the Moon.
As has since been explored in the documentary Jim and Andy: The Great Beyond, Carrey remained in character as Kaufman (and/or his alter ego Tony Clifton) for the duration of production. Given that Kaufman had a knack for causing chaos, this resulted in a chaotic and uncomfortable work environment for many on-set.
Behind the scenes footage from the Man on the Moon shoot was withheld from public view for almost 20 years, over (perhaps understandable) studio concerns that it would make the bankable star "look like an !*$%."
While the performance won Carrey a second consecutive Golden Globe, he was once again overlooked by the Academy, who still haven't given him a single nomination.
