Shortly after the release of Wonder Woman, Charlize Theron addressed rumours that she had been offered the part of Diana before it went to Gal Gadot.

As it turns out, she wasn't offered the title role but in fact the part of Diana's mother, Queen Hippolyta, which didn't sit too well with the actress who, at the time of shooting had just barely turned 40 years of age. She said:

"This is a great of example of how Hollywood slaps you in the face when you start aging... So somebody had said to me, 'Oh, there's action on this thing, Wonder Woman - we just want to make you aware of it.' And I was like, 'I'm just not familiar with it… I mean, what does Wonder Woman do?' And this person said, 'No, it's for Wonder Woman's mom.'"

Theron wasn't much impressed with what she felt was another example of Hollywood's gross ageism against women over the age of 35, and considering how she was more than qualified to play Diana herself, you can understand why.

With Theron turning the part of Hippolyta down, it went instead to Connie Nielsen, who is a decade older than Theron though certainly doesn't look her age.

While you can argue that Amazonians aren't subject to the same physical laws of ageing as humans, Theron still felt the implication was clear, that Hollywood sees her less as the hero than the hero's mother these days.
