What Ever Happened to Baby Jane? is an ugly story that shows what can happen when a feud between two divas spirals out of control. That's the plot of the movie too.

Tinseltown icons Joan Crawford and Bette Davis were rivals long before they shared the spotlight in Robert Aldrich's 1962 classic and regularly fired shots at one another in public forums. The director was no doubt hoping they could channel some of that malice on screen, though he got more than he bargained for from both parties.

Aldrich spent more time trying to prevent Crawford and Davis from killing each other than he did directing, but he was powerless to stop Davis from delivering a very real kick to her co-star's face while filming an altercation sequence, inflicting a wound which needed stitches.

In an incident that occurred away from the cameras, Crawford injured herself tripping over a stack of Coca-Cola bottles her nemesis had lined up outside her dressing room, a petty reference to her having married Pepsi boss Alfred Steele.

Crawford gave as good as she got, though and got her revenge when filming a scene in which Davis had to drag her lifeless body along the ground. By lining her dress with lead weights, she made sure her rival pulled a muscle in the process.
