10 Actors Who Went Unnecessarily Muscular For Movie Roles

3. John Cena – Steven (Trainwreck)

John Cena IS unnecessarily muscular. The guy is an absolute beast. If he hadn’t built a career off being the most muscular person in any room, you’d wonder why he'd devote his life to being a tank made flesh.

Any film Cena stars in – unless playing himself in a biopic, another professional wrestler, or a non-CGI version of Fantastic Four’s The Thing – could be included in this list, but I’ve chosen to include his performance in the 2015 film Trainwreck.

In a rom-com surrounded by average-looking people with average-looking bodies, the juxtaposition between them and him is stark. This isn’t The Avengers where everyone is Chris Hemsworth or Chris Hemsworth-adjacent after all – and even if it were, Cena would still look like a giant.

The script requires John Cena to be a gym-addict, but an actor like Mark Wahlberg would have sufficed. John Cena looks like four Mark Wahlbergs smooshed together.

I used to get paid to write from an office until Covid took away my office and then took away my job. These days you'll mostly find me in bed binge-watching Buffy or standing outside a club at 10.01pm - hand pressed against the glass with a single tear running down my mask.
