8. Johnny Depp - Sweeney Todd (Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street)
There's no doubt that the character of Sweeney Todd, be it the movie re-telling from the '30s, or in Stephen Sondheim's Broadway version on which Tim Burton's recent movie adaptation was based, is supposed to be an unattractive, downtrodden and rather dead looking man - nothing even close to the handsome wonder that is Hollywood A-lister Johnny Depp. In a lot of ways, giving the character of Sweeney Todd an attractive overhaul is akin to stripping the Hunchback of Notre Dame of his hump. Depp seemed totally like the wrong guy here. And that was before we even knew he could sing! Luckily for fans all of
Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street, Depp proved to be oddly inspired casting. Not only could he sing well enough to carry an entire movie, he reinterpreted the character so that he worked for a 21st century audience. Gone were the overweight, Alfred Molina-like looks of the Todds we'd come to know thus far... Depp's told with made haunting through his handsomeness. It actually made
sense, which seems bizarre when you consider how this character is supposed to look.
