2. Anna Kendrick - Woman of the Hour

Anna Kendrick's directorial debut Woman of the Hour is certainly a solid showcase for her filmmaking chops, though somewhat less assured is her decision to also play embattled protagonist Sheryl Bradshaw, a game show contestant who was unknowingly caught in the midst of serial killer Rodney Alcala (Daniel Zovatto).

The big problem here is that Kendrick never once convinces as a woman existing in the 1970s.

Even ignoring her clothing and hairstyle, which barely feel like they're approximating the period at all, Kendrick's vibe and mannerisms throughout the film simply feel like we're watching an Anna Kendrick-adjacent person existing in the modern day.

Kendrick's quirky public persona permeates through to her character to a distracting degree, and so while her dramatic performance here is totally commendable, she's ultimately unable to get entirely out of her own way. It ostensibly doesn't help that Kendrick bares little physical resemblance to the real Bradshaw, and so it's easy to appreciate that Kendrick should've stayed behind the camera on this occasion.
